Family-dining restaurant operator expands all-you-can-eat platform

Shoney’s, the family-dining operator, has overhauled its all-you-can-eat breakfast bar offerings, the company said this week.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Shoney’s, which first introduced the breakfast bar in the early 1980s, has rolled out new items on the “All You Care to Eat Breakfast Fresh Food Bar, after consulting with its own research and development teams, its franchisee partners, supplier partners and customers.

David Davoudpour, Shoney’s CEO and chair, said the new items play on Shoney’s strengths, such as strawberry pie, and offer new versions of the brand’s classics.

“I like sweet in the morning with a cup of coffee,” Davoudpour said in an interview Monday, “but that bacon and cheddar cheese grits — it’s magnificent. It’s a classy Southern dish that you can’t ignore.”

Breakfast bar prices depend upon location and can range from $9.99 to $14.99, he said. The all-you-can-eat bar is in all Shoney’s unit, he added.

Besides the Bacon and Cheddar Cheese Grits, new breakfast bar items include:

  • Biscuit & Gravy Strata with sausage, spinach and cheese.
  • Blueberry Muffins.
  • Cinnamon rolls with traditional icing.
  • Churro Donuts.
  • Strawberry Trifle that features biscuits layered with whipped topping and sliced berries.
  • Sausage Skillet Hash with eggs, cheese, and vegetables.
  • Egg Frittata Cups in two varieties including bacon-cheddar and red bell pepper-spinach.
  • Sweet Heat Crispy Chicken Biscuit with Shoney’s Hot Honey sauce.

The new items tap into Shoney’s heritage. The brand was founded in 1947.

“We’ve been famous for our strawberry pie since 1947,” Davoudpour said, “so we know one or two things about the strawberry pie. We got a strawberry trifle out there, and it’s a beauty.”

Shoney’s units in the largely franchised system are open at 6 a.m. or 7 a.m., and serve the breakfast bar until lunch, Davoudpour said. It then switches to lunch. Most units close at between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., depending on the location, he said.

Gill Duff, chief marketing officer for Shoney’s, added in statement: “Nothing is better than when innovation and collaboration are in unison and this was proof. We have dramatically improved the already industry-leading breakfast option.”

Davoudpour’s Royal Hospitality Corp., an affiliate of Atlanta-based Royal Capital Corp., acquired Shoney’s North America in 2006.

Shoney’s has 65 restaurants in 17 states.

Shoney's CEO David Davoudpour.

Shoney’s Chairman and CEO David Davoudpour announced on July 17 that Shoney’s will phase out plastic straws in all of its company-owned stores by 2020. “America has spoken and Shoney’s always listens and for the sake of the environment and our communities, we are taking action,” said Mr. Davoudpour. “We are in the people business and have spent decades doing the right things in our neighborhoods as well as our restaurants and are committed to being at the forefront of this change.”

You may have heard a lot about single use plastic straws in the news lately, as they’ve been getting a lot of deservedly bad press. Plastic straws are inarguably terrible for the environment, and Shoney’s is committed to preserving our lands and protecting wildlife. Mr. Davoudpour says Shoney’s will introduce FDA-compliant eco-product straws with paper and plant materials with are 100% compostable.

Franchising is the New Focus of the Rebuilt and Better Iconic All-American Brand; New Shoney’s restaurant featuring the new prototype opening in March 2016

Nashville, TN  (RestaurantNews.com)  Everyone has a Shoney’s memory and if momentum is any indicator, Shoney’s is ready to serve up some more.

The iconic All-American restaurant brand, which was the premier family casual dining concept in America for generations, is ready to grow through franchising following an extensive revitalization effort, which includes adding the most important element: hiring the right team and attracting the right franchise partners.

With momentum-building executive additions from Eric Cleveland as Executive Chef, Terri Harof as Director of Franchise Sales and Lori Asbury as Director of Marketing, Shoney’s is ready for re-launch.

“Timing is everything and we’ve been very strategic and calculated about bringing America’s Dinner Table back to its ‘Glory Days’ and the time is now,” said David Davoudpour, Shoney’s Chairman and CEO. “The brand achieved its place as an American icon with fresh quality food at a great value and we cannot wait to show it off to a new generation.

Since acquiring the great American eatery in 2007, Davoudpour has been on a driven and spirited mission to reinvigorate and revitalize Shoney’s, a family-friendly, southern-style restaurant brand. Shoney’s was one of the first family casual dining concepts in the United States.

“When I bought the brand, I declared that we would bring Shoney’s back to the forefront by proudly serving delicious, fresh-never frozen food that is highly craveable. In addition, we rely on our company’s three pillars: innovation, simplicity and giving back to our local communities,” said Davoudpour. “Shoney’s is now ready to grow the brand by teaming up with franchise partners who share our commitment to this great brand.”

The most recent franchisee to come on board is the world famous wrestler and former WCW Heavyweight Champion “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner (Scott Rechsteiner) with his wife Christa, who are building a brand new Shoney’s in Acworth, Georgia, which is scheduled to open in early March.

Eric Cleveland, Executive Chef

“The changes Shoney’s has made to the food using fresh ingredients and offering innovative menu items as well as the beautifully redesigned restaurants with modern furnishing is truly amazing,” said Christa Rechsteiner. “Shoney’s is such a wonderful brand with a rich history that is just getting better. We feel truly blessed to open a Shoney’s where we live and our kids go to school.”

The 6,000 square foot Shoney’s will feature some of new brand standards including a full service granite bar with stacked stone, a private dining area for larger parties, large TV’s, fresh squeezed OJ, salad and hot food buffet and a variety of freshly prepared options from the menu.  The private dining area will include an array of wrestling memorabilia.

According to Harof, Shoney’s has been a household name for decades to many people and the brand is excited to reach new guests in new neighborhoods. “Now, we’re introducing Shoney’s to a new generation in new markets throughout the world by expanding via franchising with redesigned restaurants and a renewed dedication to fresh quality food, friendly service at a great value.” said Harof.
